Section Supervisor (MLT) Essential Functions:

  • Supervises daily staff activities for an assigned area or function within the laboratory.
  • Determines, coordinates and supervises daily staffing assignments and levels.
  • Provides direction, orientation, training, coaching, and mentoring to staff. Performs or assists with performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Assesses and ensures quality of services delivered and facilitates staff development programs.
  • Ensures staff compliance with departmental and organizational policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Performs staff responsibilities as needed to fulfill required service levels.
  • Leads the handling and resolution of complex issues and complaints.
  • Writes and updates policies and procedures for their technical area.
  • Assists in the selection of new test methodology and implementation of new tests, procedures and/or analyzers.
  • Maintains inspection-readiness for the assigned section, including, but not limited to: linearity, range of acceptable ranges, calibration, calculation reviews and method comparisons for the section supervised. Ensures that test validity is maintained throughout the entire testing process from the collection of the specimen through sample analysis and reporting of results.
  • Serves as resource expert for technical area.
  • Orients and trains new staff. Provides instruction to students of local college classes.

Minimum Education: Associate’s degree in medical technology or related science or have equivalent education and experience as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988. Graduate of a formal training program in medical laboratory technology is required.

Required Skills: Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Must have knowledge of laboratory procedures and ability to perform laboratory functions in the essential areas of chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, microbiology, clinical microscopy and transfusion medicine.

Certifications: Certification as an MLT is strongly preferred.

Minimum Work Experience: Two years of clinical laboratory experience.
